Crack the kopitiam coffee code
Kopi is a system. Four Malay words and you can order anything.
The one line to remember
Kopi O kosong satu.
One black coffee, no sugar.
The kopitiam order is a stack: the drink, the milk, the sugar, the temperature. The milk codes (O, C) are Hokkien and Hainanese. Everything else is Malay, and it never changes.
Kosong drops the sugar. Kurang manis halves it. Panas is hot, ais is iced. That’s the whole system.

Kosong literally means empty or zero. At a kopitiam it means no sugar.

Kurang manis is the Malay way to ask for less sugar. You’ll also hear siu dai — the same thing in Hokkien.

Ada is the most useful word in this lesson. X ada? = do you have X? Works for anything.

Watch out
Three things to know
The small things that give a beginner away.
Kosong is not black
Kosong only removes the sugar. To drop the milk you need O. Kopi kosong isn’t an order; Kopi O kosong is.
Ais or peng, both fine
Ais is Malay for ice. Peng is Hokkien and just as common at the counter. Auntie will understand either.
Half-boiled, not soft-boiled
Telur setengah masak — literally half-cooked eggs — is the kopitiam egg. Say it exactly like that.
